A brief history of pizza

Pizza has been cooked in the Mediterranean and Middle Eastern areas for hundreds of years. Originally made of bread, tomatoes and served with cheese, it was considered a dish for the poor and no one knows exactly how it became such a popular meal. Flavoured bread had been used since ancient times, but the discovery that led to modern pizza was the use of a tomato topping which was possible after tomatoes had been brought to Europe from America. Until the middle of the nineteenth century, pizza was sold in outdoor stands and in pizza bakeries. Even today, there are a couple of places in Italy that keep this tradition. The spread of pizza around the world was unavoidable due to Italians’ emigration. Once pizza became a popular dish, chain restaurants started to develop.
