Forget strange shoulders or tiger print skirts, and look towards Europe for the best of fashion trends. Flat boots are everywhere in Italy. So take a little chunk of European style and try following the trendy women wearing knee boots, short boots, slouch boots, short heeled cowboy boots, sometimes sky-high heel boots, and just about everything in between.
It's all about the boot.
European Style
It seems like European styles are at least two or three years ahead of The States. So, a Boomer Chick who copies Italian or French babes will end up with clothing and accessories that will be “in” for years to come. Euro-style is a better investment than many NASDAQ stocks and almost all interest-bearing notes.
Flat Boots
Some short or round-shaped gals still like the long-legged look of three-inch heels, but those flat boots were seen on almost every hip local chick in Rome, Florence, and Venice, not to mention: Barcelona, Lisbon, and even the Azores.
It is surprising how frequently boots were spotted, as October in Italy often hits the high '80s. Hey, those boots were meant for walkin’ and stylin’, because no one’s tootsies were in danger of frostbite.
How to Wear Boots
There were four different ways that Italian women (of all ages) wore their flat boots:
- Jeans or leggings tucked into the boots
- Jeans or slacks over shorter flat boots
- Knee-length skirts or dresses with short, mid, or tall boots
- Below-the-knee skirts with short or mid boots
While not every bella donna was sporting boots, every gal speaking “di lingua Italiana” was wearing some kind of stylish footwear, even if it was just chic ballet flats.
Tall Boots
The most obvious trend, even to people who aren’t into the latest styles, was the tall flat boot. These suede or leather boots looked comfy and chic on Boomer Chicks (and up). And, the style was most definitely hip and chic on younger women.
Though, not every smart-looking gal was in flat boots, it was apparent that most well-dressed women had boots or booties with or without heels. One way to fake a flat boot, while still getting a bit of height, was to wear a wedge boot, where the wedge was covered in the same material as the rest of the shoe.
Slouch Boots
Slouch boots with short heels were seen quite a bit on Boomer age women. Yet, with these older fashionistas, it was apparent that their boots were well made and from a good store.
However, in The States, Boomer gals can find a good knockoff and get away with it, because they don’t need to walk to the center of town to get their marketing done. Americans don’t trek 5 miles a day to do errands, but many Europeans don’t have cars, so they walk or ride public transport. That’s why Italian chicks are skinny and wear great shoes.
Cowboy Boots
European women in the 20-to-40-ish age group were wearing cowboy boots with knee-length (or shorter) skirts. This look is bigger in The States, especially California, but it works with the right outfit on the right girl.
Short Boots
Both, short boots and three-quarter mid-calf boots, were worn with skirts, slacks, or leggings. And, even women who were of an age that would be called “truly adults” wore colored tights. Maybe it’s something in the Venetian water, but these gals looked hip not dippy.
High Heel Boots
High-heeled boots were more common in the evening in Italy when women were out on dates or out with gal pals. This makes sense. Most of the night is spent at an outdoor table savoring wine or strolling leisurely around the piazza.
