Thailand’s third largest island Koh Samui’s name is wrapped up in mystery; no one seems to know the exact entomology some say it is a Malay word meaning “territory”, others say that it is the name of a plant that used to grow in the southern part of Thailand but no longer does.



But whatever the origins of the name there can be no doubt that Samui Island is one of Thailand’s most popular tourist destinations and holiday spots. . In the past Samui’s main export was coconuts and they remain a major earner for the island’s economy. But it is Samui’s white sand beaches and crystal clear waters are a magnet for tourists the year round. The beaches are still fringed by a curtain of coconut palms that only add to the island’s tropical charm.

Perhaps the most famed or even infamous of these destinations is Koh Phangan where every full moon a “Full Moon Party” celebrates the rising of the full moon. The notorious all night beach party attracts revellers from around the world, dancing the night away as the moon casts a silver glow over sea, sand and dancers.

But Phangan Island is much more than the Full Moon Party, it has stunningly beautiful beaches the most striking of these are Haad Tong Sala, Haad Tong Nai and Haad Tong Noi. Phangan offers something for most tastes beach beauty and beach beauties as well as a uproarious time for global revellers.




Koh Nang Yuan

Diving off the coast of this island discloses an amazing submarine world of brightly coloured small fish, and baby sharks. The coral reefs surrounding this small three island archipelago are a snorkelers delight as the crystal waters provides perfect visibility almost year round.

Koh Tao is another must do for divers and snorkelers, its coral reefs and profusion of fish are a major draw to local and visiting divers. Can’t dive or snorkel? There is a cornucopia of diving schools on the island, but make sure that the school has a PADI certificate.

Hin Ta Hin Yai

The Grandmother and Grandfather Rocks continue to be a major tourist attraction on Kho Samui. This pair of rocky outcrops are fashioned in the shape of male and female genitalia. The local story goes that a couple sailing to the island encountered a storm and died when their ship capsized; they were washed ashore and their bodies transformed into these erotic rock formations.
