How to Repair Vintage Dolls With Chewed Fingers

The hands and legs of vintage dolls can become chewed or torn by animals and children. The repair process for the damaged doll parts requires a mold of the part to be constructed. For this reconstruction, a good doll part will be required. When finished the new body part should match the rest of the doll and be undetectable to the casual observer.

Materials Needed to Repair Vintage Doll Parts

The vintage doll repair job will require the use of a straightened paper clip, wire pliers, a good body part from another doll, Alumilite, fine grit sandpaper, steel wool. If the doll is plastic the use of Plas-T-Pair will be required. If the doll is composition use Plastic Paste to repair the damaged part. Assorted colors of doll paint will be needed to finish the doll. The type of paint will depend on the doll material.

Prepare the Doll for the New Part

Insert a paper clip into the area where the body once attached. This will act as an armature to help hold the new body part in place. Warm a straightened paper clip and insert it into the area where the body part once attached. For example, if a finger is being repaired, insert the clip into the hand where the finger once connected. Cut the clip to a 1/4-inch piece projecting from the body if you are replacing a small part such as a finger.

Make the Mold

Use Alumilite to make a mold of the good body part. Alumilite comes with two putties that are mixed to make the Alumilite usable. Use equal amounts of the Alumilite putties mixed together.

Push one side of the good body part into the putty and leave for 10 minutes. The Alumilite will be firm rubber-like mold. Remove the body part from the mold. This will make half the mold. Repeat for the other side of the good body part. This makes the other half of the mold.

Make the Body Part

Place the doll on a flat surface. Position one half of the mold in line with the correct position for the new body part. Mix Plas-T-Pair according to the manufacturer's directions until a thick gel is formed. Fill the body part mold with the gel. Place the second half of the mold over the first. Wait 10 minutes. Lift the top of the mold off. The body part will be formed. Remove the bottom part of the mold.

Finish the Body Part

Use a piece of fine grit sand paper or a sand sponge to smooth the roughage of the new part.

Paint the body part to a flesh color that matches the rest of the doll. Flaws in the Plas-T-Pair will be more apparent after the first coat of paint. Resand and repaint until all the flaws are covered and repaired.
