Islamist Rebel ADF Kills 11 In Congo's Beni City

28 March 2018 -

Islamist rebels raided city of Beni of Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) late Tuesday and killed at least eleven people, mostly with machetes and hachets, said Mayor Nyonyi Bwanakawa.

Local activist group The Center of Study for the Promotion of Peace, Democracy and Human Rights too confirmed death of eleven civilians by Allied Democratic Forces (ADF).

Similar attacks have been common near Beni by the rebels since 2014 and mostly with the use of crude weapons.

Lately Beni has become the hotspot of mounting violence and it is feared civil war may slide back again in the region.

Army spokesman Mak Hazukay said the military has attacked armed groups on Tuesday and the next target is ADF strongholds in Virunga National Park, which is close to the Uganda border.

In December 2017 the ADF had killed more than a dozen of Tanzanian peacekeepers and as a follow up a joint military offensive by Congo and Uganda was launched against ADF in January. Civilians have been caught amidst the campaign and the UN fear about 370,000 people could flee their homes.

Meanwhile, violence has increased in the country since 2016 after President Joseph Kabila refused to step down at the end of his mandate. Presidential election is scheduled to be held this year in December, but it is not yet very clear whether the vote would replace him.
