Many are former musicians themselves, so they know both the musical and studio side of recording. Many music producers are freelancers who are contracted by record labels to make a record. Because of this, salaries vary greatly, with yearly wages anywhere between $20,000 and $1,000,000.




Sound Engineers Jobs

Sound engineers "operate machines and equipment to record, synchronize, mix, or reproduce music, voices, or sound effects in recording studios, sporting arenas, theater productions, or movie and video productions," according to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics. They work with music producers and ensure the song is being properly recorded.

Sound engineers that work on the radio make sure there are good outgoing signals to go over the air. The work week can vary for engineers. There is always a different project to work on, which sometimes means putting in more than 40 hours for the week. Engineers enroll in a technical school or earn an associate's degree in a field related to math, science, or electronics. Sound engineers earn a median hourly wage of $22.29 or $46,370 annually.

Sound Technician Careers

Sound technicians work at concerts and ensure high quality sound throughout the event. These technicians can also be employed to work at sporting events or other similar festivals. They arrive early to the facility to do sound checks with the performers. "Sound technicians supervise the placement of equipment and work with the talent during the sound check to achieve the best sound. They may even work a soundboard during the actual performance," according to the Berklee College of Music.

Technicians do not always have a consistent schedule as events occur at different times. The amount of work per day will also vary. Technicians should earn a vocational or associate's degree in electronics. The median hourly salary for a technician is $18.80 or $39,100 per year.
