Natural Weight Loss Tips: Aloe

With over 400 different species, the sap from the aloe plant is often used topically on the skin as a remedy for bites, burns and cuts. It is also used in numerous over-the-counter weight loss products and diet aids. This is due to its internal cleansing properties. The most popular form of aloe is aloe vera, which is said to have strong medicinal powers and is often used in cosmetics and anti-aging creams.

Aloe as a Natural Weight Loss Remedy

Much of the research on aloe vera as a diet aid is flimsy and there is no real evidence that it can help with weight loss, even though it is added to many weight loss products. However, it does seem to work well as a laxative, which may mean it could be helpful as part of a general detox diet and weight loss program. While cleaning out the body, aloe may promote a small loss of fat which could, in theory, act as a diet aid if a sensible weight loss and exercise program were followed.

Many companies are promoting aloe in their weight loss products claiming that it can "reduce and stabilize the body mass index by stimulating the metabolic rate in liver cells causing them to burn more energy." Aloe does have a high collagen protein content, so consuming it would increase the user's protein intake. The rationale behind a higher protein intake is that the body spends more energy digesting proteins and therefore burns more fat in the process.

However, on the downside, when taken orally, aloe does have some rather unpleasant side effects, which can include diarrhea, abdominal cramps and electrolyte imbalances. Aloe may also deplete the body of potassium and is not recommended for anyone taking medications such as digoxin, used to treat congestive heart failure or diuretics.

Aloe Vera Research

Traditionally, aloe has been used orally in alternative medicine fields for wounds, ulcers and gastritis, coughs as well as arthritis and other immune system disorders. However, the only real scientific evidence is its effectiveness as a laxative and that it may be helpful in combating flu. It has also been shown beneficial for teeth and gum health.

Always talk to a doctor or healthcare professional before going on any weight loss program that includes taking any form of diet aid.
