The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975)
Susan Sarandon and Barry Bostwick are an engaged couple who get lost during a storm and wind up at none other then Frank-n-Furter's mansion. Sounds like a normal premise to a horror film right? Well that's pretty much where the normal ends and the bizarre begins. Tim Curry plays Frank-n-Furter, an alien mad scientist who also happens to be a transvestite. His diabolical plan to create the perfect man is put on hold when the unlucky couple arrive. Also featuring Meatloaf, this horror / comedy / musical is full of laughs and about as silly as they make them.
Student Bodies (1981)
With the onslaught of '80s slasher films out on the market, take a refreshing look at a classic spoof of that movement with Student Bodies. A mysterious serial killer, known as The Breather, stalks a high school killing kids and the staff members. The killer's unusual weapon choice is just one of the many classic bits from this movie. Just recently made available on DVD and almost unknown by most movie watchers, this film is more than worth the time.
Scary Movie (2000)
This one pushes the comedy envelope and will have you in tears throughout. The Wayans brothers poke fun at Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer to make one of the funniest horror spoofs of all time. Much like Student Bodies, a killer stalks a town of kids, killing them off one by one, but as always cannot seem to get past that one all-too-clever female. Great comedic performances from everyone involved add to the already outlandish script. You will be sorry if you pass this one up.
Shaun Of The Dead (2004)
A zombie comedy with a love story to cap it off. British filmmakers Edgar Wright and Simon Pegg wrote Shaun as a spoof of the classic zombie films they loved. When a zombie apocalypse strikes unmotivated friends Shaun and Ed try to survive the attack while attempting to rescue Shaun's ex, Liz. Shaun of the Dead manages to do what most zombie comedies cannot: mix laughs and scares to create a perfect blend of zombie fun. With hidden messages throughout, this film is guaranteed to become a favorite among any horror or comedy fan.
Young Frankenstein (1974)
The granddaddy of all horror spoofs. Mel Brook's Young Frankenstein is a classic in every sense of the word. With more classic lines then one could remember, this film is loved by just about everyone. Gene Wilder plays Frederick Frankenstein, a scientist obsessed with creating the monster after finding a how-to book his father had left behind. The jokes are still fresh and the black-and-white makes for the classic Universal Frankenstein feel. Not many can top this one with a hilarious cast that includes Peter Boyle, Marty Feldman, and Cloris Leachman.
So lock the doors, grab your popcorn, make a quick trip to the bathroom and enjoy a night of these classic horror comedies. For more frightfully funny movies, check out Repossessed, Zombieland, and Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein.
