Zanzibar Export Earnings Rises; Cloves, Seaweeds Playing Key Role

There has been more than 26 percent growth in export earnings from Zanzibar in the year ending January 2018, reveals The Bank of Tanzania (BoT) Monthly Economic Review (MER).


The good news have mainly come from exports of seaweeds and cloves and with 26.9 percent increase in total of Zanzibar's revenue the earnings rose to $225.9 million. In the year ending January 2017 the earnings was $178 million.

The MER report adds earnings from cloves increased by 87.6 percent while that of seaweed rose by 25.7 percent of all the goods and services in the island during year ending January 2018.

The total export of cloves reached 7,0002 tonnes while it was just 3,155 tonnes in previous year.

In the year ending January 2017 the cloves earning was $24.9 million while in the last year it rose to double, $55.3 million.




However, price of cloves came downward a bit comparing the two years. It decreased to $7,904.3 from $7,907.7.

In the year ending January 2018 the seaweed exports amounteed to 7,413.2 tonnes while in the predecing year it was 5,175.7 tonnes. The value were $2.7 million and $2.4 million respectively.

Similar to cloves the price of seaweed too decreased. It was down by 20.4 pecent to $361.4 from $454.1.

Apart from these two, the transport rose by 8.9 percent to $1.16 million in the year ending January 2018 and travel receipts too was up by 11.8 percent to $2.37 million due to increase in arrival of tourists.
