Douma (Syria) | 8 April 2018:
About a ton people have been killed in Syria's Douma town in a suspected chemical attack.
Head of the White Helmets, Raed al-Saleh, said 70 people have been suffocated to death and hundreds of others are suffocating still.
Ghouta Media Center confirmed through its Twitter handle that over 75 people have been suffocated to death and 1,000 others are suffering with the effects of the alleged chemical attack.
United States-based charity, the Union of Medical Relief Organizations, cited the confirmation of 70 deaths from the Damascus Rural Specialty Hospital.
State Department spokeswoman Healther Nauert said Syrian government along with its allies must be accountable for the alleged chemical attack and also any further such attacks should be prevented.
Russia is one of the main allies of Syrian government and is being blamed for the attack. With the Russian support the course of war has turned in Assad's favor.
Meanwhile, Syria's state news agency Sana said such reports of allegation are invented by terrorist rebel group Jaish al-islam, which is currently under a state of collapse and their attempt to obstruct the Syrian Arab army has failed.
Russia too has denied Syrian government forces deployed chemical weapons in the region and added specialists would be sent to the scene after rebels are expelled to collect data which will prove chemical use reports are false.
Douma is in Syria's Eastern Ghouta and it is the last rebel-held town in the region. Ground and aerial assault of intense level were launched Friday following failed talks between Russia and rebels. Dozens of people were killed.
About half a million people have been so far killed in the Syria war that started some seven years ago. Millions of people have dispersed too as refugees in other countries.
