Early History of Chelsea FC

Chelsea Football Club is a professional English football club headquartered in West London. Established in 1905, the club plays in the English Premier League. Today they’re known as one of the most stable clubs competing in the top tier of the Premier League. However it wasn’t always that way. Chelsea has had significant hurdles to jump on their rise to the top.

In 1904 football had gained impressive popularity in many of the towns of northern England. In the capital however, football had failed to become popular. During this era none of the teams in the first division were from London.
The Creation of Stamford Bridge

A business man named Gus Mears saw the potential to bring a big name football team to West London. In early 1904 Mears choose a piece of land that was formerly known as the Athletic Ground of Stamford Bridge to build his stadium.

Chelsea very nearly never happened as Mears received a lucrative offer to sell the land. The Great Western Railway Company made an impressive bid as they wanted the land for a coal dumping station. The temptation for Mears to up sell was narrowly avoided as his friend and associate Fred Parker was able to finally dissuade him from taking the deal.

Now that the dream of a football club was off and running it was time for Mears to get to work. Mears concentrated on the particulars of the stadium and grounds before he began to assemble a team. Once plans were finalized Mears sought to invite the nearby Fullham Football Club to move to his stadium at Stamford Bridge. The Fullham club declined the offer making Chelsea the first club where the team was built for the stadium, not the other way around.
