Maldives-India Relationship Turns Sour; Returns New Delhi-Gifted Naval Helicopter

Male (Maldives) | 4 April 2018:

The Republic of Maldives seems want to re-confirm they are friend of China better than with India. In the latest update of series of deteriorating ties Male has returned the gifted helicopter to New Delhi.

India had gifted two naval helicopters and it is learned the small Islamic nation wants a Dornier maritime surveillance aircraft and not the Dhruv Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH).

Earlier, Maldives offered an airport project to a Chinese company even though an Indian entity had won the order.

A Chinese embassy was recently opened in Maldives and the two countries have signed Free Trade Agreement. It is even rumored Beijing may set up a naval base there. All these are unsettling for India.

Very recently Maldivian Ambassador to China, Mohamed Faisal, said India is a brother to them and they will sit down and resolve all the arguments and quarrel at the end.

Meanwhile, China is looking at the picturesque Indian Ocean archipelago as a major participant in their 21st century Maritime Silk Road plan in the Indian Ocean.

Late February Male declined New Delhi's invitation to take part in the biennial naval exercise. However, it was later said Maldives was then under emergency situation.

The country was plunged into chaos following the order of apex court to release nine imprisoned Opposition politicians citing the trials were flawed and motivated politically.

President Abdulla Yameen refused to follow the court order and imposed state of emergency. The government arrested former president Maumoon Abdul Gayoom and several judges too. The emergency was lifted on March 22.

On February 10 the Maldivian police arrested Indian national Money Sharma and British national of Indian-origin Atish Ravi Patel and handed over to immigration authorities saying the two journalists violated immigration rules of Maldives.
