Edinburgh: Things to Do, Sights to See, Food to Eat

Life in Edinburgh revolves around its Old and New Towns. The transition between their architecture shows the change through time from history to modern times. Both add to the cultural and historical beauty of the city. Set against the breath-takingly beautiful green Edinburgh hills, the winding streets, stone buildings and happy people of Edinburgh make the city the best weekend get-away.

Things to do and see in Old Town of Edinburgh

The tightly packed, old-fashioned, stone buildings add an essence to the city difficult to not admire. They speak of a fascinating history that cannot be ignored. The Royal Mile is the main road to keep track of in the area - it marks what is known as the Old Town. One end of the Mile is the Scottish Parliament and the other end the famous and beautiful Edinburgh Castle. The Palace of Holyroodhouse (the Queen's residence in Edinburgh is near the Scottish Parliament.

Fried Mars is the Edinburgh delicacy that cannot be missed. A walk leading from the Mile towards Festival City, literally 5 minutes away, is Edinburgh Cafe serving the best Fish & Chips in the city and the divine Fried chocolate of your choice. Fudge Kitchen, for special home-made fudgy recipes of chocolate, and hazelnut sweets, is another must stop-over after all the calories from Fried Mars have been burnt out with the walking around the Old and New Towns.

The Royal Mile is surrounded by steeply sloping streets, cobbled pavements, scenic buildings, and a feel that is nostalgic in an uncanny way.

Edinburgh Castle is located at the top of the Royal Mile

Unarguably the perfect spot to view the Edinburgh city is from the castle - it pays off the steep walk to the top of the Royal Mile. Being the top most tourist attraction of the city, the walk up to the castle is filled with souvenir shops, and stalls selling Edinburgh specialties. With the Scottish pipes playing in the background the streets along the Royal Mile and the life surrounding it is bustling with energy and happiness.

On your way back down the Royal Mile, if there is time its reasonable to stop by at the free-entry museums and visitor centres or just walk straight to the Princes Street with its shops and galleries.

Edinburgh in short

A right choice? Oh yes it is! Buying those coach or train or airline tickets headed for Edinburgh will be a decision never to be regretted (unless of course the realization dawns that a drive up to the city was probably a better choice).
