Ghana: Mosques Don't Use Loudspeakers, Instead Call For Prayer Through WhatsApp

Accra (Ghana) | 16 April 2018:

Ghana has asked Muslim community to help authorities in reducing noise pollution in the cities, including capital Accra. The mosques are urged to use mobile phone text message or WhatsApp to call people for prayer five times a day instead of using loudspeakers.

Cities like Accra are highly noisy and chaotic. Loudspeakers used by churches and mosques compound to the problem.

Environment minister Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng has asked the imamas of mosque why can't the messages for prayer call be transmitted through WhatsApp as such practice may help in curbing the noise pollution in Accra and other Ghanaian cities.

Muslims have dismissed the idea saying it is more difficult to embrace such practice and even all the people in their community are not literate.

Fadama community mosque imam Sheik Usan Ahmed said they are not paid a monthly salary for the services offered and hence they can't afford to send messages through text or WhatsApp five times a day to all the people in their community.

He added that they practice what is possible and even the need of WhatsApp messaging is not necessary.

One of the Muslim residents said there is nothing wrong in waking up early at dawn and using loudspeaker to come and pray.

However, it is a signal by the Ghanaian government a new law may come up in an attempt to curb noise pollution in the urban parts of the country.

World Health Organization (WHO) has long warned exposure to noise pollution may have negative impact on health of people. It may lead to sleep disbalance, cardiovascular disease and cognitive impairment.

A sound-level test in Dubai found 80 decibels volume at a mosque at a distance of 50 meters. The result-level is same as the volume of a vacuum cleaner.
