Love Actually (2003, R)

This chick flick was recommended by a guy. Really. Love Actually stars Hugh Grant, a fellow who is always a hit with the ladies, and this film has something for everybody, with 10 different love stories weaving around each other. A guy can become engrossed in piecing it all together or he can veg out and just smile. Love Actually is a very mainstream romantic comedy.

Ladyhawke (1985, PG-13)

This medieval fantasy / romance stars Matthew Broderick (pre Ferris Bueller) as Phillipe Gaston, a thief who escapes the castle dungeon, becomes friends with Captain Navarre, and learns that Navarre is in love with Lady Isabeau (Michelle Pfeiffer). Unfortunately, there is an evil curse put upon Navarre and Pfeiffer, whereby he is a wolf by night and she is a hawk by day, thus, they are forever kept apart. Ladyhawke is filled with hair-band music; good for guys and good for a laugh.

The Girl Next Door (2004, UR - Not for Kids)

A high-school boy, falls in love with the girl next door, who happens to be an ex adult-movie star. This film falls into the American Pie / Risky Business genre which appeals to guys with an under-age sense of humor. The question is: What does one's man watch when he's with his buddies?

Before Sunrise (1995, R) / Before Sunset (2004, R)

In Before Sunrise, an American guy backpacking through Europe, talks a French girl (a complete stranger) into getting off the train with him in Vienna and spending the night with him. They talk and fall in love, but it is the guy’s last night in Europe and, of course, he goes back home. It’s a simple movie about two people falling in love. Most of the flick is realistic and conversational as the two of them wander around Vienna. This is a film for intellectuals. Before Sunset is the sequel, with the same actors in a similar situation, nine years later in Paris.

As Good as it Gets (1997, PG-13)

This movie has bad boy Jack Nicholson typecast as a scatological-body-part jerk, which he always plays so well, to much male applause and empathy. And, the reason this movie is funny is that Nicholson plays a foul-mouthed, obsessive-compulsive romance novelist who just wants everyone to leave him alone. Then Nicholson gets involved with Helen Hunt and befriends a gay neighbor. After that the real fun begins.

West Side Story (1961, UR)

This is a musical, but it’s set to cool beatnik jazz from the 1950s, which gives it a bit of glam. The story is a New York tenement-slum version of Romeo and Juliet, where a guy from a white gang falls in love with a girl from a Puerto Rican gang. It’s a touching story for people who can dig it.

True Lies (1994, R)

True Lies with Arnold Schwartzenegger and Jamie Lee Curtis is an action adventure with a bit of a twist. Schwartzenegger and Curtis are married but the wife doesn’t know that Arnold is a James-Bond-style government agent. The wild scenes and banter between the two of them is hysterical. It’s a very cute movie which also comes with an Uzi or two. If the other movies don’t sound appealing, try this.

Hopefully, one of these romantic movies will be a fit for both halves of a couple. Otherwise, a person can always fall back on the traditional-white-bread movie: Pretty Woman.
