Hollywood began to take notice of Damon after his role in Courage Under Fire. A year later, the screenplay he had written for English class at Harvard University was nominated (as the movie Good Will Hunting) for nine Academy Awards, propelling his career.

Matt Damon and the Early Years

Matthew Paige Damon was born October 8, 1970, in Boston, Massachusetts. He grew up in Cambridge, Mass, just around the corner from his friend Ben Affleck. His parents divorced when he was two. He was accepted to Harvard in 1988. He dropped out 12 credits short of graduation. Within five years he and Affleck created the story and characters for Good Will Hunting (1997) and Damon has been leaning forward since.

Damon Gets the Big Roles

Matt Damon was Private James Ryan in Saving Private Ryan (1998). He has starred in the Ocean's series, The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999), The Bourne Identity (2002), The Bourne Supremacy (2004), The Good Shepherd (2006), and The Bourne Ultimatum (2007). He gained over 30 pounds for his role in The Informant! (2009). He continues to be a major contender in the film industry. According to one official site, there is an "Untitled Jason Bourne Project" in the works for release in 2010.

Is Matt Damon skilled in the martial arts? The Bourne movies leave the impression that he is. In an interview with Starpulse, Damon downplayed his abilities. He spent some time learning some basics of Krav Maga, an Israeli martial art, but says his learning was time-limited. "You can't learn those things properly in the time I had," he said.

Damon's Personal Life

Matt Damon's ancestry is English, Scottish, and Finnish. He is five feet, ten inches, and his weight fluctuates according to the needs of his acting roles. On December 9, 2005, Damon married Luciana Barroso in a private civil ceremony. She is from Argentina.

Damon is close friends with George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Ben Affleck, and Jennifer Garner. He created a bowling league in Berlin while filming The Bourne Supremacy. Damon has supported, among others, the following charities: Ante Up For Africa, Arthritis Society of Canada, Lance Armstrong Foundation, Not On Our Watch, and The Children's Center.
