How to Plan a Gay Wedding

Given the growing number of countries and U.S. states that have legislated in favor of gay marriage, the ceremonies have been loaned a new sense of legitimacy. But some wrinkles do exist between planning for a gay marriage ceremony and a traditional one. These differences range from location, and officiants, to the guest list.

Gay Friendly Churches

Gay weddings take as long to plan as a traditional wedding, so you will want to consider planning up to a year in advance. Many of the same principles will apply, such as wedding photos, invitations and such. You needn’t feel compelled to create gay and lesbian themes (unless the couple requests it) as a gay wedding ceremony can also take traditional form or be understated as the situation allows.

When drawing up the guest list, consider the stance of everyone you’re inviting and whether or not they will be comfortable with attending such a ceremony. Even those close to the couple may still experience some unease with the arrangement. When booking a reception hall, you might consider giving your business to a gay friendly hall. A search engine query can often yield results for gay friendly halls and businesses in your area.

Gay Friendly Businesses

Gay marriage is still considered highly taboo in many churches, but there are plenty of churches with a more liberal stance. For example, the United Church and Unitarian Churches will often perform a gay marriage ceremony. The Anglican Diocese of Niagara voted to perform same sex blessings (which is not quite the same as a marriage) for those couples who are civilly married and in which at least one partner is baptized.

Gay Marriage Canada

You might decide that a church or religious ceremony isn’t for you at all. Still, you have options that will allow you to have a pleasant ceremony that will still be legally recognized. In Canada (where gay marriage is legal at the federal level) you might try Weddings for All Seasons, which caters to couples who would like to custom-fit their wedding ceremony but also perform many gay weddings.

Not holding the wedding in a church allows the couple (and the wedding planner) to use their imagination. You might try a wedding by a lake, on a beach, or even in your home or back yard. Remember, you will want to know what level of legality the union will be in your country or state, and whether or not clergy will be available to perform the ceremony, if desired.
