World Playground First in CD Series

In 1999, Putumayo put out its first children's CD, World Playground. Featuring artists from 11 different countries such as Bolivia, Australia, and Greece, this award-winning CD became a huge hit. There is a wide variety of music genres included, such as reggae, choral music, and folk songs. The rhythms, beats, and melodies are intriguing and are quite different from traditional American children's music.

The lead song is, "Fatou Yo," by Toure Kunda of Senegal. There is no need to understand the lyrics, because this fresh beat is impossible not to dance to. Many kids and parents alike will recognize track 3, which is Cedella Marley Booker (mother of reggae icon Bob Marley) and Taj Mahal singing, "Three Little Birds." The rhythm and lyrics of this well known song has a way of making folks relax and enjoy the moment as they listen to the voices singing, "Don't worry about a thing....every little thing is gonna be alright."

One of the most unique and interesting songs on World Playground is, "Bongo Bong," sung by Manu Chao of France. This funky tune is about a bongo-playing monkey who is disappointed that when he goes to the city to show off his skills, no one is interested. Truly a song that will get a chuckle from both parents and children.

More Children's Music Options as Playground Series Expands

After the success of World Playground, Putumayo introduced World Playground 2. Similar to the first in the series, this also featured a wide variety of artists from countries such as India, Spain, and South Africa. Once again, the music on this CD seems to give a glimpse into these different cultures as lyrics in various languages flow with ethnic beats.

One example of a fun, energetic song on World Playground 2 is track 2 is "Music Farm," performed by Xtatik of Trinidad. Lyrics chant, "Down in Trinidad we have a music farm,,,,ee-i-ee-i-oh." Of course, American kids can relate to this take-off on Old McDonald, and will find themselves singing along.

Playground Series Now Featuring Many Choices

The Playground series has further expanded into even more areas of great international music for kids. Now available are Latin Playground, Picnic Playground, Hawaiian Playground, Sesame Street Playground, and Brazilian Playground, to name a few. Latin Playground even has an activity kit that is available, with educational activities related to the music.

For many children, music is an integral part of their lives. Kids love to sing and dance, and it is important to expose them to different types of music. The children's music cds of the Playground series from Putumayo provides a wide range of culturally diverse music with fun, fresh, funky beats and melodies.
