Culture is not new to Orlando. After all, the first opera house was built in the 1880s when Orlando had a whopping population of 85. In the heart of downtown, the two-story wood frame opera house had unfinished walls, and patrons sat on wooden benches.

A lot has changed since then. Nowadays, the state-of-the-art Carr Performing Arts Center in downtown hosts the Orlando Ballet, Orlando Philharmonic, the Broadway Series in musical theater and visiting artists such as the National Philharmonic of Russia.

The historic, 23-acre Lake Eola Park remains a focal point of downtown Orlando. Besides enjoying the landscaped grounds, a stroll around the lake and taking a fun "swan" paddleboat out, visitors can attend a Shakespeare Festival presentation at the Lake Eola Amphitheater.


A couple of blocks from Lake Eola, the Orange County Regional History Center offers a fascinating glimpse of Central Florida history with three floors of permanent exhibits. History buffs learn about the area's rich past in citrus and cattle ranching. Recently named an affiliate of the Smithsonian Institute, this historical center welcomes special exhibitions throughout the year.

A few miles from city center, Loch Haven Park-enhanced by several lakes-is home to the Orlando Museum of Art, the Orlando Science Center and Mennello Museum of American Art, which houses a substantial collection of Earl Cunningham paintings.

Not far from Loch Haven Park, Leu Gardens is a must-visit. The 50-acre gardens showcase a museum home (circa 1880s), three miles of paved, scenic walkways, the most extensive camellia collection in the US, the largest formal rose garden in Florida, a butterfly garden, vegetable and herb garden, and two-acre tropical stream garden. Its three-acre home demonstration garden highlights 10 residential scaled gardens. Concerts are often given the last Sunday of the month.

Winter Park Art Museums and Gardens

It's a convenient pathway from Leu Gardens and Loch Haven Park to nearby Winter Park, a lovely community of tree-lined streets, boutiques, superb eateries, and art galleries and museums.



On Park Avenue in Winter Park, the Charles Hosmer Morse Museum of American Art houses the most comprehensive collection of Tiffany glass in the US. Here, visitors will also find 19th and 20th century American decorative arts.

Also in Winter Park: The Albin Polasek Museum and Sculpture Gardens, Cornell Fine Arts Museum, Bach Festival Society, the well-known annual Winter Park Sidewalk Arts Festival every March and Annie Russell Theatre. The Polasek, for example, features 200 works by the Czech sculptor, his lakeside home and studio on the National Register and three acres of gardens.

There's also a level of entertainment at the theme parks that appeals to grown-ups such as the high energy choreography and acrobatics of Cirque du Soleil at Disney and the Blue Man Group at Universal. Epcot boasts an annual International Flower & Garden Festival that runs for several weeks each spring. During the festival, music groups are on hand to entertain guests every night. All with grown-ups in mind.
