Exploritas (formerly Elderhostel) is featuring unique guided trips for grandparents, grandchildren and whole families to several of the U.S. parks spotlighted in the 12-hour Ken Burns PBS documentary “National Parks - America’s Best Idea.”

Exploritas Grand Canyon Family Packages

Its Grand Canyon family adventure takes five days and offers parents, grandparents and grandchildren the opportunity to share the thrill of whitewater rafting along the Colorado River. The trip includes a full day on the river with experienced guides and instructors before leaving the canyon via a scenic helicopter flight.

The package also covers the region’s geology, native Americans and a visit to a nearby ranch for cowboy lore. This is for children 9-13 and is limited to no more than one grandchild per adult. Cost per person: starting at $995.

Exploritas Family Tours to Zion and Bryce, North Rim

A 7-night package covers the less visited but no less spectacular north rim of the Grand Canyon, along with Utah’s color-drenched Zion and Bryce Canyon National Parks. The trip includes 2 nights in each. Exploritas promises that young and old alike will “discover the secrets and mysteries of sculptured canyons and soaring cliffs as instructors guide you through two billion years of Mother Nature’s handiwork.”

The tour brings the geology, ecology, and human history of this incredible region to life “in a fun and fascinating format,” says the company. Different trips are rated suitable for children 7 and up or 8-14. Cost: from $1062 per person.

Exploring Yosemite With Grandkids

Yosemite is sometimes called the “crown jewel” of the U.S. National Park system. The Exploritas “Share the Wonder” package is suitable for children ages 8 to 11. It features knowledgeable guides and rangers, who lead families on hikes to Mirror Lake, Vernal Falls and at Glacier Point.

This trip also includes rafting down the Merced River for fabulous views of the forests, flora and fauna. In addition, its classes teach families about John Muir, the naturalist who championed Yosemite and who founded the Sierra Club, as well as photographer Ansel Adams. Both men were highlighted in the PBS documentary. Cost per person: starting at $1049.

Exploritas Trips to Grand Teton, Yellowstone, Denali

The nonprofit company has planned 4 and 5-night trips for grandparents, parents and children ranging in age from 7 to 15 to Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks, as well as to Alaska’s Denali (Mt. McKinley). Some Teton and Yellowstone packages include rodeos and horseback riding. Cost: fro $895 per person.

Amazing Service Onboard. Qatar Airways.

In Alaska, Exploritas promises journeys that safely “search for caribou, moose, Dall sheep, grizzly bear, wolves, and a host of smaller creatures.” Cost: from $1460 per person.

Overall, families who loved the PBS Ken Burns national park TV programs are bound to enjoy Exploritas intergenerational travel packages. Of course, families can also journey to the parks independently, and those over 60 visit almost free.
