Travel Guide: Cheapest Transportation from Munich West Airport

The cheapest transportation from Memmingen Allgäu Airport (Munich West FMM) to the Bavarian capital München is usually a combination of the bus and train while using the Deutsche Bahn (German Railways) discount Bayern-Ticket (Bavaria Ticket). The direct Allgäu Airport Express buses are generally more convenient and for individuals even cheaper, if further public transportation is not needed in Munich. Memmingen Airport is mostly used by low-cost airlines such as Ryanair, Air Berlin, and Wizz Air.

The Allgäu Airport Express Buses from Memmingen Airport to Munich

The most convenient public transportation option form Memmingen Allgäu Airport (FMM) to Munich is by the Allgäu Airport Express buses. Although low-cost airlines were quick to call the destination Memmingen Airport (Munich West), the airport is actually 110 km west of Munich’s city center.


Allgäu Airport Express coaches run four to eight times per day between Flughafen Memmingen (Munich West Airport) and Munich main train station (München Hauptbahnhof). The bus stops in Munich at stop 4 in Arnulfstrasse, directly to the north of the main train station and at the airport right in front of the terminal building.

Memmingen Airport is very close to the autobahn allowing Allgäu Airport Express buses to reach Munich city center in 95 minutes. (In comparison, it takes around 45 minutes by S-Bahn train from Munich Airport (MUC) to München Hauptbhanhof.)

The Allgäu Airport Express bus schedule is designed to slot in with the arrival and departure times of Ryanair flights. If a plane arrives late, the bus will generally wait for passengers to clear the terminal before departing. Flying on Ryanair is not a prerequisite for using the Allgäu Airport Express buses.

Buying Tickets for the Allgäu Airport Express Bus to Munich

The one-way fare for the Allgäu Airport Express bus from Memmingen Airport to Munich (München Hauptbahnhof) is currently €18 for adults and €9 for children under 12. Two parents traveling with their own children under 12 years pay only €36 per family.

Tickets may be bought directly from the driver or online at a slight discount (around €2 per person). Reservations are required for some early morning and late night departures. In the unlikely event that a low-cost airline passenger will turn up with too much luggage, the Allgäu Airport Express charges €4 (€3 if paying online) from the third suitcase up.

By Bus and Train from Memmingen Airport to Munich

Although the Allgäu Airport Express buses are generally the most convenient way to travel from Memmingen Airport to Munich, a cheaper, if slower and more complicated, option exist. Taking the municipal bus to Memmingen station and then the train to München Hauptbahnhof can be slightly cheaper for individuals and is a real bargain for small groups using the Bayern Ticket.

Memmingen Airport is a 12-minute bus ride from Memmingen bus station (ZOB), which is directly next to the railway station. Bus 2 and bus 811 operate on this route up to 13 times per day, less often over weekends. The one-way fare is €2.50 but the Bayern Ticket may be used (and is available directly from the driver).

From Memmingen station, regional trains take around 90 minutes to Munich main train station (München Hauptbahnhof). These regional trains cost just less than €20 one way (€24 when using the 75-minute Euro-City or Inter-City, on which the Bayern-Ticket is not valid).

The trains from Memmingen to Munich are mostly direct but occasionally an easy transfer is required at Buchloe station. (Change trains at Bucloe if heading to the Disney-like Schloss Neuschwanstein Castle near Füssen.)

The savings by using the train rather than the Allgäu Airport Express comes into play when the discount Bayern Ticket (Bavaria Ticket) is used. This general transportation card covers virtually all public transportation throughout Bavaria including the bus from Memmingen Allgäu Airport to Memmingen, all regional trains in Bavaria, as well as the metro, trams, and buses in Munich. (The private Allgäu Airport Express is not included.)

Note the special conditions of the Bayern-Ticket, but single travels who can use it, will pay only €20 for a day’s transportation. The biggest savings are for small groups of up to five traveling together, who will pay only €28 for a full-day of transportation in Bavaria and Munich, or €20 for traveling at night after 6 pm.
