To Palma – A Palma Guide

Palma Majorca Holidays - Palma Reviews

Located on the southern coast of the island of Majorca Palma is a great holiday destination for a real range of holiday makers. If you scan reviews of Palma you’ll find them written by people of varying ages and interests.

Palma is the major city of Majorca (or Mallorca) and capital of Spain’s Balearic islands. It’s a lively modern city but also has interesting cultural and historical facets.

The city has been through major changes since the 1950s and the advent of tourism. Sadly some of these changes have resulted in a real loss to the city, taking away attractions that would have been real assets for Palma as a holiday destination. Palma did for example have ancient city walls running along the sea front but these were torn down to be replaced by a busy dual carriageway.

Although some of the actions carried out to establish Palma as a must-vist destination on the map of European holiday resorts were retrospectively misguided the city still has a rich abundance of interesting and attractive places to visit.

During the summer months there is a vibrant disco scene and Palma is only a short distance round the bay from Magaluf. But after the high-season months have passed visitors can enjoy the quieter aspects of the city and its surrounding countryside.

Hotels in the centre of Palma can be more expensive but there are numerous hotels which spread out from the city centre along the bay. There is a footpath along the sea front so visitors staying not too far out of the centre can take a leisurely walk into the city and back.

For those who are staying further out the bus service is cheap and regular. The buses have a very useful electronic ‘running commentary’ announcing the name of each stop. This is really useful for the newly arrived holiday maker. Taxis are also quite reasonably priced.

A Palma GuideAs well as the Cathedral (Le Seu), the Palace and the old town, other must- see sights include -

The Arab baths:

These baths date back to the 10th Century and are part of what was once an ancient Arab city. The baths include a peaceful courtyard with cactus and palm.

Castell de Bellver:

Located on the hills above Palma it has wonderful views of the bay. It was built in 1300 and was at one time used as a prison. The easiest way to visit Castle Bellver is to take the city sightseeing bus, which also stops at number of other places of interest.

Other interesting things to see are La Rambla with its street flower market, Mercat Oliver (Palma’s atmospheric indoor market), the outdoor sculptures in the Palau March museum and the modernista style architecture of the Gran Hotel and the bakery - Faun des Teatre. Stop there for a coffee and cake while exploring the city on foot.

Palma Park

The area where the Palma Park stands now was once part of the sea. During the modernisation of the city this area was reclaimed and turned into a park. It’s now an enjoyable feature of the city. It is of particular interest as this development was very controversial at the time it was created. It’s now used well and is popular with locals as well as tourists.

Palma Majorca Holidays – The Neighbouring Area

If you would like to discover a little more of Majorca three easy to reach destinations that are more than worth a visit are: Deia, Valldemossa and Soller. These can be reached by catching a coach from the train and coach station in the centre of Palma. But an even better way of reaching Soller is by taking the vintage wooden train. This journey is really fun and runs through the breathtakingly beautiful landscape of lemon trees and mountains. The train stops at the lovely old village of Soller and from there a tram will take you on, if you wish, to the sea and attractive Port de Soller.

Deia is a very pretty village and Robert Graves, the poet and novelist who lived in this mountain retreat from 1946 up to his death is buried in the mountain churchyard. The scenery from this mountain village is stunning.

Valldemossa is the highest town on the island. This is a very popular town for tourists as the composer Chopin and novelist George Sand stayed here for a short time. Visitors can take a tour of the monastery where they stayed.

Palma Majorca - City on the Sea

As a tourist destination Palma Majorca ticks a lot of boxes. It has all the attractions of a modern, cultural and historical city combined with sea air and with truly breathtaking countryside close at hand.
