Barbados: What To Do, What To See

Barbados is a small island but there is still plenty to do and see. From relaxing on beautiful beaches to watersports to experiencing the nightlife on offer, there is always something happening.

Visit Bridgetown, The Capital of Barbados

Bridgetown, the capital city of Barbados, is good for shopping when looking for a discount. Visitors to the island can buy items at tax free prices. A passport and travel ticket is needed at time of purchase. Tobacco and alcohol is sent direct to the airport ready for collection on leaving.

There is a free shuttle to Bridgetown from South coast hotels. Hotel receptions should be able to help arrange this.

Oistins Fish Fry

Food is available in Oistins every night but it is Oistins Fish Fry, held on Friday and Saturday nights, that attracts the most visitors, and it is Friday's which are most popular. Expect lots of food stalls selling fish, rice and peas, macaroni pie, etc. There is also beer on sale (try Banks and Carib). Music plays loud and there is an area for dancing. An excellent part of the Barbados experience, it's not to be missed.

Barbados Boat Trip

Taking a boat is a good way to see the island from the ocean, aswell as experiencing the calm ocean. Catamaran cruises are available from a variety of companies – hotel receptions should be able to point in the direction of the closest. There are a lot of tours of the island that include boat trips and swimming with turtles – check Coconut Tours, Adventureland 4x4 tours and Glory Tours for some ideas. Atlantis offers an alternative sea opportunity with submarine trips. They offer family rates and private charters are available.

There are plenty of beaches in Barbados, with white sands and warm sea. Dover Beach and Miami Beach on the South coast are popular. Along the East coast the sea is rougher and is not very safe for swimming. Crane Beach has been voted one of the “top ten beaches of the world”. The Crane is one of the most luxurious hotels of the island, so visit the beach that attracts so many.

St Lawrence Gap

St Lawrence Gap is great place to go for nightlife. Popular with both tourists and locals, the Gap is full of restaurants, bars and nightclubs which provide entertainment until the early hours. Try Cafe Sol or Josef's for food, and pop into The Ship or The Reggae Lounge for drinks.

Continuing with the drinking theme, there are rum tours with both The Mount Gay Rum Tour and also the Malibu Beach Club and Visitor's Centre, where visitors can see how Barbados rum is made and ofcourse sample the drinks on offer.

Exploring the Caribbean Island

A good way to explore the island is to hop onto a bus and see where it goes. Buses and shared taxis are cheap at $1.50 per person regardless of the destination. Barbados is a small island so it is easy to find the way back if going into new areas.
