The Zanzibar archipelago in the Indian ocean consists of numerous small islands. The islanders are very poor but tourism has increased exponentially in the last decade or so.

Backpackers who wish to cross over from Tanzania will have to do so by ferry or by plane. The ferry trip takes approximately 90 minutes and costs $35 per person one way. A cheaper, slow boat, overnight ferry can be taken for $20 per person one way. Children's prices are $25 one way.
Flights cost approximately $50 per person one way, slightly more or less depending on the carrier.
Getting around is as simple as taking a “dalla dalla”, which is a kind of local bus that comprises of a few benches on the back of a pick up truck, with a cover on the top onto which everything from banana trees to sacks of maize are thrust for the trip. The cost is cheap (2 000 Tanzania shillings from Stone Town to Nungwi beach in the north which equates to roughly $1.60 per one way). Bear in mind that the drivers travel at breakneck speed and swerve to avoid chickens or children en route.
Taxi's and Car Hire – A taxi will cost around $70 to get from Stone Town to the northern beaches or to the beaches on the south of the island.
Car hire is roughly $35 per day including insurance, excluding petrol. Petrol is expensive, budget around 10 000 Tanzanian shillings (roughly $8.50) to get from Stone Town to Nungwi or Kendwa beach in the north. Petrol costs add up quickly when driving around visiting the different beaches.
Zanzibar Restaurants and Accommodation
Hotels range from 5 star, $150 per person per night lodges. The cheapest accommodation in the north of the island costs from $20 - $40 per person, including breakfast at most establishments.
In Stone Town itself, an average meal at an average restaurant will cost around 15 000 Tanzanian shillings ($13.50).
At beach destinations, expect to pay around 8 000 – 10 000 Tanzanian shillings for a pizza, around 12000 for a meal such as fish curry and rice. Off the beaten track local restaurants offer the same or sometimes better food for around half the price.
Bear in mind that there is no shame in negotiating the price in either a hotel or beach bungalow accommodation or in a restaurant. The same principle applies on snorkelling or diving excursions, especially if there is a group booking. The highest price will always be given in the hopes that the visitor will accept this without question, but prices will sometimes drop by as much as 30% if the same visitor is prepared to haggle a little. Bargaining is considered normal and can result in significant discounts, especially out of season.
