Casual Beach Wedding Dresses

If you are getting married on the sand, you might end up wearing glorified flip-flops or going barefoot. So you should look at casual beach wedding dresses to keep your wedding simple, chic and elegant. A Cinderella ball gown or a dress made of stiff, starched fabric may not look right with bare feet.

Go for something simple and flowing. Trains are okay if you are on a hard surface, like a terrace or dry grass, but you might want to avoid long trains in the sand (depending on the type of sand). Actually, a beach wedding is a perfect occasion to wear a tea-length dress or a short mini dress, although long sexy, sultry dresses look great, as well.

Beach Wind and Rain

You need to have some sort of backup plan for a change in weather. If your beach wedding is in Hawaii, be prepared. Almost every spot in Hawaii will get at least a few sprinkles every day. And, only Lono can foresee how long the sprinkles will last, so expect an ever-changing sky in the islands. (Although, it's still warm in Hawaii during sprinkles.) If you are in Southern California, there is less chance of rain, but some beaches have big winds at sunset. This varies by time of year.

Beach weddings are fabulous and worth the extra contingency planning, but make sure that:

-Your hair is casually styled. Even an updo can be messy chic with tendrils hanging down.
-Your hat or veil is secured.
-You have a shawl or bolero nearby for cool winds.
-You have a good sense of humor.

Hawaiian Wedding Gowns

There is a traditional, old-fashioned Hawaiian wedding gown called Holoku. This style was adopted when the missionaries came to Hawaii in the 1820s. I know a beautiful woman who wore this at a Kahala Beach wedding and she was stunning, but this style must fit perfectly. The Holoku is best on slim shapes or curvy, hourglass figures, and you might need a tailor.

Here are some updated Holoku styles that are more fun and easier to wear:

-Hawaiian Wedding Dress
-Maile Lei Wedding Dress
-Classic Hawaiian Wedding Dress

You do not have to be getting married in Hawaii to wear any of these flattering Holoku styles. They will look at home on any tropical or semi-tropical beach.

Hippie and Indie Casual White Dresses

One thing about beach weddings is that you get to call your own shots. The Kahala wedding that I mentioned was a very traditional Hawaiian wedding with cute Hawaiian (local) dudes playing stringed instruments and singing things like The Hawaiian Wedding Song. On the other extreme, I have seen beach weddings where people arrived in cut-off jean shorts, and those weddings were about as formal as a backyard barbeque. So, be sure to give proper hints to your guests or they won't know what to wear.

One thing I would like to mention is that if you wear a gauzy dress, make sure that it is not too see-through, because you might be between the guests and the rising or setting sun. At the very least, you should have a kick-butt body if the sheerness factor is high.

Some people do have fairly formal beach weddings, but I would never attempt to pull one of these off without a highly-recommended beach wedding specialist who knows the area. And, hey, it’s your wedding. You can do whatever you want. If you want to wear a white bikini top and a white sarong or you want a 6-foot train, there is always a way to make it happen. But, promise me that you'll have fun.
