Vienna, with nearly 1.7 million people, is Austria's largest city by an overwhelming margin. Vienna is rich in culture and history, just one reason why it is a fantastic place to study abroad. Over 74,000 students study at the University of Vienna (Universitaet Wien). There are other universities in Vienna as well, including a medical school, a school for arts and music, and a school for economics and business.

For EU students, Graz (in particular the Karl-Franzens-Universitaet Graz) is a popular Erasmus destination. A Graz program students from the USA should consider is the one offered by the State University of New York (SUNY) at Binghamton, as it is open to students not attending a SUNY school as well.

Salzburg, population 150,000, is Austria's fourth-largest city after Vienna, Graz, and Linz. This birthplace of Mozart has a beautiful old town, complete with several churches, a fortress. The 1965 movie musical The Sound of Music was mostly filmed on location in and around Salzburg. On the other side of town are the beautiful Mirabell Gardens.
In addition to having all of the above features, Salzburg's Paris Lodron University is a place where over 14,000 students choose to study. The school is located right in Salzburg's old town. One study abroad program to consider, in addition to Erasmus, is through the College Consortium for International Studies (CCIS).

Innsbruck, a city of nearly 120,000 surrounded by mountains in the province of Tirol, is a beautiful city with Austria's third-oldest university (after Vienna and Graz), the Leopold-Franzens-Universitaet Innsbruck. Founded in 1669, the University of Innsbruck is home to over 20,000 students.
Innsbruck is convenient to other great university cities like Munich, Germany. Salzburg is also just a few hours away by train, as is Switzerland. Tirol is also a wonderful place for skiers and snowboarders to spend a semester or year abroad, as there are plenty of slopes nearby.

Cities like Linz and Klagenfurt are also home to universities. For those looking for a smaller city, Krems and Leoben both have universities. Steyr (near Linz), Wiener Neustadt (near Vienna), and Villach (near Klagenfurt) are also places to consider. Both Steyr and Wiener Neustadt have populations of about 40,000. Villach has just under 60,000 inhabitants. All are home to technical colleges. These technical schools are called Fachhochschulen, or Universities of Applied Sciences.
