Even with the correct bra measurement, bras will still need to be tried on to make sure the bra fits properly. The correct bra fit for women’s lingerie will vary depending on the style and company of the bra.

When a Bra Band is Too Small

When the bra band is too small it can cause many issues. It may be difficult to breathe with a tight fitting bra band. Also it can cause the skin on the back to wrinkle in an unflattering way, causing a look of back fat.

A correctly fit bra band will allow one to two fingers to fit comfortably in the sides of the bra. Try on the same style bra in one band size larger. It may be necessary to decrease the cup size when increasing the band size.

When a Bra Band is Too Large

A too large bra band is very common for a majority of women, partly because of how the bra is measured. Many mainstream department stores measure incorrectly when determining the bra band size. It is wrong to add additional numbers to this measurement! Many times when we measure around the rib cage the correct fit will be the same number with maybe an inch greater in difference (depending whether it was an even or odd number). Never add more than two inches to this measurement. A majority of the support of a bra is in the band. If the band size is too large, the breasts will not be fully supported.

A large band size can also cause the appearance of back fat because it rides up in the back and does not support correctly. Try on a bra that is one to two sizes smaller in the band size. When lowering the band size, the cup size will need to be increased.

When a Bra Cup Size is Too Small

When the bra cup is too small, the breast will spill out over the bra and the underwire in the front of the bra will not be flat against the body. If the band size is correct, then increase the cup size and check for fit. Another option would be to try a different style bra. For instance, a demi style bra does not always fit a full figure bust line. By trying on a different style, even though it is the same size, it may fit properly.

When a Bra Cup Size is Too Large

If the fabric of the cup puckers or gathers than the size is too large, assuming that the band size is correct, it will be necessary to go down another cup size or try a different style bra. Just like if the cup size is too small. Trying on a different style even though it is the same size, it may be the proper fit.

It is important to note that not all bras are created equal and that a 32D is not the same as a 36D. Cup sizes very for each band size. Just remember when shopping for bras it is a lot of trial and error. If after an afternoon of shopping and a bra is still not comfortable, call in a professional for help.
