Party Food Ideas for Kids

Kids love parties. Getting together with family and friends can be exciting, sometimes too exciting for kids to think about stopping to eat. Having a variety of foods available, an appealing presentation, and timing just right when to serve the food will help kids stop, at least for a few minutes, for a bite to eat.

Have a Variety of Party Food to Serve Everyone's Taste

Having a variety of food to serve at a party is important. Not everyone likes the same foods. Not all kids like the same foods from one day to the next.

  • Some kids like spicy, but only mean a little spicy or not even meaning spicy but flavorful
  • Dips are great for parties, and can be eaten with crackers, fruit, vegetables
  • A variety of vegetables, cut small and thin for kids
  • A variety of fruit - in season and with the freshest taste if possible, slice some fruits for easy eating like chunks of watermelon or slices of strawberries, or save some work and let kids have the watermelon with the rind and eat strawberries whole
  • If pizza is served - offer just cheese slices, as well as other slices with popular toppings like pepperoni
  • If ice cream is being served offer at least two flavors
  • Let kids make their own ice cream sundaes, offering candies, sprinkles, crushed cookies and syrups as toppings
  • Offer freezies for an ice cream alternative or an extra treat on a hot day
  • Offer carbonated as well as non carbonated beverages and water
  • Offer small pieces of deserts, such as brownies, cookies, or cake so there isn't as much waste and more things can be tried

Presentation of Food at Kids Parties

If there is a theme to the party, have a couple of dishes tied in to the theme. For example, like serving tacos as well as the taco chips and salsa for a Mexican theme party. For kids, instead of serving the tacos already made, it would be better to have the separate food items for them to assemble themselves. Here are some other ideas for party food for kids:

  • Dips are great but they need to look appealing, especially for kids. Make layers instead of stirring it all up. For example, spread out a layer of cream cheese, then tomato sauce, add pepperoni, then top with grated cheese for a baked pizza dip
  • Skewered or sticks are nice for meat, fruit, cheese or whatever because then there are less utensils and dishes, are in smaller bites and can be eaten quickly. Also, the fact they are on a skewer is fun in itself. If worried about the pointy end - cut off the tip of the skewer or use straws for small pieces of fruit
  • Offer small pieces of food so kids don't feel overwhelmed to have to eat it all or if they are worried about not liking it
  • Add little swords or umbrellas to food and drinks to make things more festive, and the kids will play with the decorations as well

Timing the Serving of the Food at Parties

Timing is everything for kids. They need a little bit of warm up time when they first get somewhere to feel comfortable. Build in a little playtime before bringing out the warm food. If food does not have to be refrigerated, don't be too quick to put it away, as kids will nibble as the day goes on and get hungrier the more they play.

Stagger serving the party food and bring out one type of food at a time, especially for kids parties. For example, bring out a fruit platter with a variety on it, but only bring out the fruit. That way there is no competition between choosing between fruit and potato chips for example.

Having enough variety of foods to suit everyone's tastes and presenting the food in an appealing and fun manner is important, especially for children. Timing when each party food is served, so that tasty treats are not in competition with healthy snacks offers more of a balance in foods eaten. This will allow everyone a chance to enjoy all the party food.
