Travel Health Tips for Business Travelers

When a cold or the flu takes over, sometimes the best place to be is at home. However, corporate life doesn't always agree – sometimes meetings, conventions and other events must be attended, regardless of whether the traveler is sick. Here are some ways to cope with being sick while traveling.

Checking Up on Travel Medical Insurance Before Hitting the Road

Whether sick or healthy, travelers should be aware of the coverage their insurance provides before leaving home. Check to see what coverage the location offers, including what hospitals accept the insurance policy. In addition, for pregnant travelers or those with chronic conditions, consider programming the phone numbers of the hospital and other services into a cell phone.

Rest and Relax Before, During and After the Business Trip

Before leaving, rest as much as possible to help speed the recovery period. In addition, try to eat a balanced diet rich in fruits and vegetables and stay well hydrated.

While traveling, eat right and rest when possible to help the body recharge. Drink plenty of water, juice or other clear fluids and take frequent breaks. Bring along snacks such as crackers or granola bars and individual bottles of water or juice to stay hydrated. In addition, try to sit or lay down when possible during the day and go to bed early at night to rest and recharge for the next day.

Cheap Tickets Can Mean No Itinerary Changes for Corporate Travelers

If a cold takes over before the travel dates, look into the policies of the airplane tickets and hotel reservations. While many times no cancellations are allowed when purchasing cheap tickets for air travel or hotels, the company might make an exception for an ill passenger. If in doubt, call the airline or hotel and speak directly with a representative to see what options are available, including rescheduling, transferring tickets or reservations to another name, or canceling all reservations.

Also talk to coworkers or a manager to see if the trip is essential, or if perhaps a colleague can fill in. In addition, there may be the possibility of rescheduling.

Don't Let Jet Lag Disorder Make Business Travel More Unpleasant

Jet lag affects many travelers on long-haul flights, including across the country or international travel. Prepare in advance to mitigate the effects of long travel and crossing multiple time zones, including adjusting to the destination time zone a few days ahead of traveling and staying well rested.

Business travel is sometimes scheduled months in advance; if a traveler finds he or she is ill during the scheduled dates of a trip, there are some options to make the trip less unpleasant – or to reschedule.
