Hotel Tigaiga, Puerto de la Cruz – Tenerife's Best 4-Star Hotel

Widely regarded as the best 4-star hotel on Tenerife, Hotel Tigaiga (pronounced ‘Tig-eye-ga’) at Puerto de la Cruz was opened by the Talg family from Germany in 1958. Still owned by them, it is now run by the grandson and granddaughter of the founders.

Hotel Tigaiga Is Above Puerto de la Cruz

Set in the Taora Park, formerly an arid scrub-covered hillside of volcanic ash, Hotel Tigaiga has the advantage of being within easy reach of the sea and shops at Puerto de la Cruz, yet away from its busy streets and popular black lava sand beaches.

This makes it a much more relaxing place to stay than most Puerto de la Cruz hotels or indeed most of the hotels anywhere on Tenerife. The rooms on one side look across the resort’s rooftops to the sea, while those on the other side face Mount Teide, the volcanic peak that dominates Tenerife’s skyline

Wide Range of Facilities at Hotel Tigaiga

Guests in the hotel’s 80 rooms, which include several suites, enjoy a wide range of facilities - heated swimming pool and sun terrace with parasols and sun beds overlooking the sea, sauna, massage, hairdresser, lawned garden, tropical garden, cactus garden, tennis court, table-tennis, chess, boules, walking routes, two restaurants, bar and evening entertainment.

The gardens are a particularly important part of the hotel whether for a quiet stroll, sitting with a book or simply dozing on a sun-lounger. The Talg family are proud that they have planted as many palm trees as the hotel has beds.

But the Tigaiga hotel’s greenness is not confined to its gardens as the Talg family go out of their way to make it environmentally friendly using solar panels and recycling its well water.

Reflexology Walk in Hotel Tigaiga’s Gardens

The gardens even include a "paseo de casquillas", a reflexology walk where guests can walk barefoot over, in turn, sections of grass, volcanic stones, wood, pebbles and other materials to stimulate points on the soles of their feet.

Many holidaymakers return to the hotel again and again. Indeed some have stayed there over fifty times. And some of its staff have worked there for over thirty years.

Puerto de la Cruz

Puerto de la Cruz itself has an attractive Old Town quarter with narrow cobbled streets and colonial architecture. It also benefits from the smart Lido pool complex and Playa Jardin sub-tropical gardens, both designed by the Lanzarote-based architect, Cesar Manrique. On the edge of the town, the Loro Parque zoo-park is one of Tenerife's top visitor attractions.

The main event of the year in Puerto de la Cruz is La Sardinada on Ash Wednesday, part of the annual Carnival, when a huge replica sardine is paraded through the streets and burned on a funeral pyre at the harbour, followed by a lavish fireworks display.
